Vending Machine History and Use

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

A vending machine is a coin-operated machine by which many materials can be sold. Vending machines are not lumped with coin-actuated amusement arcade games or music radios.

The first commercial use of vending machines occurred early in the 18th century in England, at which time coin-activated “honour boxes” were used to vend snuff and tobacco.

These machines were also utilized with the British-American civilisations later in the era.The first practical, commercial use of vending machines occurred in the United States circa 1888, at which point they were used to expand the sales of chewing gum into places in which gum sales could not otherwise be made, including the platforms of the New York City elevated railway.

The American industry was limited mainly to penny-candy retail til 1926, at which point the modern standard of automatic retailing was begun in the development of cigarette vending machines. The first known soft-drink machine followed around 1937.

As the Americas started its military buildup before to its participation in World War II, plant managements determined that employees could not work properly for 10, 12, or more hours without a sustainment recess, so vending machines were the most ready procedure of giving refreshments.

In the 1940s to ’50s the vending machine industry was concentrated in plants and factories, and by the end of that period, vending devices were being used to retail a whole variety of freshly made along with prepackaged items to eradicate and supplement ordinary in-plant food service mechanisms.

Refrigeration was developed in vending devices to sell bottled soft drinks. The applicability of vending machines to sell products for comparable costs 24/7 without any regard to breaks is at present globally utilized.

The commercialisation has moved outside of plants and factories, and vending devices are often utilised in schools, colleges and universities, recreation centres, health care facilities, offices, and other such places.

Usually, vending devices are provided by businesses (operators) who own and place machines on locations owned by others. The corporations provide whole maintenance and service, as well as products for sale, usually with no a cost to the owners of the premises other than sometimes a servicing cost.Vending machines have been employed in Great Britain, continental Europe, and Scandinavia since the 1880s, when they were employed to provide candy and tobacco items.

In recent times, the vending device business in those countries has closely paralleled the expansion of vending machines in the United States.

Vending in Japan started with marked earnest during the 1960s and furthered vigorously in an iconic area in Japan’s distribution procedure.

Movies, Books, Politicians the Water Bottle is Under Siege

Monday, April 26th, 2010

Carry a plastic water bottle at your own demise; the wave of public view is turning on you. From popular rating documentaries, to the written word and politics, the hot debate in our lives is the problem that is bottled water and the waste that the industry generates.

The producing, transporting and disposal of water in petrochemical plastic bottles eats up big quantities of water and energy, and produces ridiculous measures of greenhouse gases and waste.

Director of the recent documentary ‘Tapped: get off the bottle’ Stephanie Soechtig sums it up “1500 water bottles end up in landfill every second – that’s 30 million water bottles a day! We wanted to show people just how much waste is generated by bottled water.” The Tapped crew are promoting the movie with their across-America roadshow, asking money from Americans to reduce their water bottle waste and taking their old plastic water bottle for a reusable stainless steel bottle. Download Tapped from Amazon or iTunes.

Another such film ‘The Story of Bottled Water’ was released on World Water Day in March. Created by Annie Leonard of the famous ‘The Story of Stuff’, this short film explores the process that amounts to swaying Americans into buying around half a billion bottles of water every week, despite the option of a few cents cost for a drink from the tap. See her documentary on You Tube.

With her book ‘Bottlemania’, investigator Elizabeth Royte demonstrates one of the monumental marketing coups of the last century and demands a strong environmental alarm. She investigates the red flags we must inevitably deal with. Who distributes the drinking water? What can happen when a bottled-water business possesses your town’s water source? Is the water coming from the tap wholly safe? What really is the environmental price of production, transporting and disposing of one plastic water bottle?

Politicians from everywhere around the world are beginning to realise that they have to start the campaign – notably when the places where they serve are huge consumers of bottled water. How often do we see a politician at a function sipping from a water bottle. Surely they must be able to use a water glass in Parliament House.

Leslie Samuelrich of Corporate Accountability International, told “Cities and states are spending hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on bottled water, and that’s not to mention what’s spent to deal with all the plastic bottles that are thrown out.”

In July 2009, the NSW rural town of Bundanoon became the first place around Australia to stop the sale of bottled water. Around 60 places in the American states and some places in Canada and the United Kingdom have recently stopped the expenditure of taxpayer money on bottled water.

It is doubtless that these problems will be debated during World Water Week 2010 from September 5 to 11 in Stockholm, Sweden, the annual meeting for the world’s most urgent water-related issues.

Types of Non-Destructive Testing

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The tensile-strength test is inherently futile; at the time of the process of collating data, the sample is obliterated. Although this is permissible when a safe store of the sample is at hand, nondestructive techniques are safer for materials that are expensive or complex to create or that have been shaped into finished or semicompleted samples.

Liquids

One tried and true nondestructive technique, employed to detect surface breaks and imperfections in samples, uses a penetrating liquid, which needs to be luminescently coloured or fluorescent. After being left on the surface of the sample material and set to sink into any tiny flaws, the fluid is removed, leaving readily visible imperfections and imperfections. Another such method, applicable to nonmetals, employs an electrically charged liquid pasted on the nonmetal surface. After excess fluid is cleaned off, a dry powder of opposite charge is sprayed on the surface of the material and sinks into the breaks. Neither of these methods, however, can identify internal flaws.

Radiation

Internal, like external weaknesses, can be located with X-ray or gamma-ray techniques in which the radiation passes through the material and impresses on a suitable photographic film. In some cases, it is possible to focus the X rays toward a particular section in the piece, bringing up a three-dimensional view of the flaw geometry as well as its location.

Sound

Ultrasonic inspection of parts involves transmission of sound waves higher than human hearing range through the test sample. By the reflection technique, a sound wave is transmitted over one part of the piece, reflected off the opposite end, and signalled back to a receiver located at the beginning end. By locating a weakness or imperfection in the material, the sound wave is reflected and its signal disrupted. The actual delay becomes a measure of the location of the imperfection; a map of the sample can then be created to reveal the location and dimensions of the flaws. With the through-transmission process, the transmitter and receiver are started at opposite sides of the sample; delays in the signal of the sound waves are utilized to locate and measure weaknesses. More often than not a water medium is used by which transmitter, sample, and receiver are immersed.

Magnetism

As the magnetic traits of a material are heavily formed by its overall form, magnetic methods can be employed to isolate the area and relative size of flaws and cracks. With magnetic testing, an apparatus is utilized that consists of a big measure of wire through which flows a steady alternating current (primary coil). Nested inside this initial piece is a smaller coil (the secondary coil), to which is linked an electrical measuring tool. The steady current in the initial coil generates the current to flow within the secondary coil through the technique of induction. If an iron bar is slotted into the secondary coil, sudden changes in the secondary current can signal flaws in the rod. This technique only detects differences in sections along the length of a sample and will not find long or continuous marks very easily. A parallel skill, utilizing eddy currents induced with a primary coil, also may be used to find marks and breaks. A steady current is induced in the test object. Marks that exist in the path of the current change resistance of the test object; this alteration will then be measured by the correct equipment.

Infrared

Infrared methods have also been utilized to find material continuity in involved constructual items. In testing the quality of adhesive bonds with the sandwich core and facing sheets within a typical sandwich construction item such as plywood, for example, heat is applied in the surface of the sandwich skin item. Where bond lines appear to be continuous, the core samples allow a heat sink in the surface object, and the localised temperatures of the face then appear spaciously on these bond lines. In the case that the bond line appears to be inadequate, missing, or mistaken, however, temperature should not adapt. Infrared photography of the face does demonstrate the geography and shape of the failing adhesive. A variation of this technique uses thermal coatings that change hue upon reaching a specific temperature.

Conclusively, nondestructive test techniques also are sometimes sought to show a whole understanding of the mechanical aspects of a test object. Ultrasonics and thermal procedures appear most valuable in this situation.
