Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most typical question that is asked when looking for a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: do I get an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, standing for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, standing for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many brands and different models available, it can be overwhelming for consumers to pick between these technologies. The simple fact of the matter is that LCD projectors give superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next paragraph will explain why DLP projectors struggle with bringing up a comparable rate of image quality.

Visualise a set of blinds in your house covering your bedroom window. By a twist of a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, according to if you want to let light in or not. Such is exactly how an LCD projector works. Each pixel functions like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either send light through or to block it. Something important to remember about LCD projectors is that all three colours are delivered onto your wall simultaneously. The way a DLP projector works is very different and even the final product of how an image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is sent through a spinning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This way of creating an image casts a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as described above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to produce the image elements. The elements of the image are displayed in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eyes will then combine each coloured element of the image into a full image. With LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to create the best brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, just one colour is available at a time, and so resulting in lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some manufacturers have placed a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this further damages colour accuracy.

I read in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and as such must be superior. For those unsure, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the projector is capable of producing. DLP projectors do offer high contrast specifications compared to many LCD projectors. At first glance, this must be a benefit, however, in real life, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room in which the projector is used. Do not be fooled by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you wish to see includes moving images, DLP projection technology also has image imperfections, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector forms with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images change between the time red, blue and green colours are projected. LCD projectors do not have this downside because the colours are processed at once. DLP manufacturers have created 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to resolve the colour break up error, but the price tag of these projectors make them impractical for many businesses and consumers.

Another variance between LCD and DLP is how they compensate for the refractive qualities of light. Remember back to high school science, and remember how different colours of light refract varied amounts when directed through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they utilise the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously not the same and refract light in a different way. Generally with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will come up above and some blue will appear below something as simple as a lone black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be set to minimize these effects on the projected image, because each colour is processed on isolated LCD panels.

The one real advantage (excluding price) with buying a DLP projector is its overall smaller size and weight. However, this is only relevant in regard to mobility and must be traded off against the image benefits of LCD projectors. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch rose to dominance in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht had been a pleasure craft used first by royalty and secondly by the burghers for the canals and the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Yacht racing was incidental, borne from private matches. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English throne in 1660, the city of Amsterdam gave him a 20-metre (66-foot) leisure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he then named Mary. Charles and his brother James, the duke of York (James II, reigned 1685–88), made additional yachts and in 1662 raced two of them from the Thames, from Greenwich, to Gravesend, and returning, on a £100 punt. Yachting rose as fashionable for the wealthy and royalty, but after that period the habit did not last.

The first yacht club in the British Isles, the Water Club, was formed in about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and had great naval panoply and formality. The closest thing to racing boats was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued an imaginary enemy. The club persisted, for the large part as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, after merging with other societies, it was known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some stipulated manner on the Thames around the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland funded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to monarchy in 1820, it was then called the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded after a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht club had been initiated at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal sponsorship made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the perpetual location of British yacht racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, again at the rise of George IV. Each member was required to possess boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing races for great stakes were held, and the club life was wonderful. Eventually Royal Yachting Club boats increased in size to over 350 tons.

In North America, yachting began with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English had control. Sailing was for the most part for fun and found its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which sailed on the Mediterranean Sea and created a standard of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in that area from the late 19th century. The first continuing American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was formed in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens instigated the New York Yacht Club aboard his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The first sailing yachts took the lines of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century until the latter half of the 19th century. The craft of sizeable yachts was originally greatly impacted by the victory of America, which was designed by George Steers for a syndicate started by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) found its namesake after its win at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and crafted in a contemporary sense, with merely a model being used. Not until the latter half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come into being. Today, one of the most rapidly flourishing areas in the sailing industry is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are created to standard dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other areas (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing these boats can be had on an even basis with no handicapping at all. A prime example is the uniform International America’s Cup Class taken on board for yachts in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

So long as yachting was done primarily for the royal and the wealthy, expense was no issue, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The promotion and desire of smaller craft occurred in the second half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A journey around the world (1895–98) led single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the value of smaller yachts. Following this in the 20th century, particularly after World War II, smaller racing and pleasure boats became more common, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, yachts of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, during which steam started to replace sail power in market craft, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were increasingly favoured in pleasure craft. Bigger power yachts were progressed to a high element, and long-distance cruising was a fond pastime of the rich. The early power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then made way to those powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller kind of propulsion. As well as naval and merchant boats, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht fashion for several years. By the latter half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the large part were exclusively power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

From the last decade of the 19th century there was a rise in the manufacture of bigger steam yachts. Notably among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, containing triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, commissioned by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and gave active service in World War II.

As bigger and more reliable internal-combustion engines were produced, many big yachts began using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, with heavy oil for fuel, advanced during World War I. During the decade after that, large power-yacht creation blossomed, reaching a climax in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that period the biggest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of larger power yachts fell away in 1932, and the fashion from then was toward smaller, less costly boats. After World War II, a lot of small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. At the late 20th century, yachting had become a internationally loved competition enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually sailing and maintaining their own small leisure craft. Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes are differentiated by the impact they have on the placement of income and wealth. A proportional tax is the kind of tax that applies the same relative burden on all taxpayers—i.e., in the case where tax liability and income move in the same scale. A progressive tax is recognised by a more than proportional growth in the tax onus relative to the increase in income, and a regressive tax is recognisable by a less than proportional increase in the related burden. So, progressive taxes are seen as fighting inequity in income distribution, while regressive taxes may have the result of an increase in these inequalities.

The taxes that are generally believed to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are nominally progressive, however, may become less so for the upper-income categories—especially if a taxpayer is able to lessen his tax base by claiming deductions or by taking some particular income parts from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income groups would also be more progressive if exemptions of a personal nature are declared.

Income measured over the period of a given year may not definitely provide the most accurate measure of taxpaying requirement. For example, transitory growth in income can be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer might decide to provide for consumption by taking from savings. So, if taxation is made comparable with “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than when compared with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (with the exception of those on luxuries) are generally regressive, because the share of individual income consumed or spent for a specific good declines as the level of personal income grows. Poll taxes (also known as head taxes), levied as a flat amount per capita, obviously are regressive.

It is hard to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally because of uncertainty around the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of determining who bears the tax burden is dependant crucially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being decided.

In assessing the economic purposes of taxation, it is important to differentiate between various points of tax rates. The statutory rates are dictated in law; generally these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates indicate the fraction of incremental income taken by taxation when income rises by one dollar. So, if tax onus grows by 45 cents when income rises by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax legislation generally contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that grow as income rises. Heavy analysis of marginal tax rates are required to regard provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) falls by 20 cents for each one-dollar increase in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points greater than indicated in the statutory rates. Since marginal rates display how after-tax income moves in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the necessary ones for considering incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to know the marginal effective tax rate applied to income from business and capital, since it may rely on factors such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nil under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates determine the part of total income that is required in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is relevant for judging the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate rises with income. Average income tax rates usually grow with income, both because personal allowances are permitted for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received for the most part by high-income households may swamp these effects, allowing regressivity, as signified by average tax rates that fall as income increases.
